Business gas is quoted as a unit rate in pence per kWh plus a daily standing charge, priced per meter at the point you accept a contract. Consumption, postcode and contract length all move the price, so comparing at renewal is the practical way for a UK business to control gas costs.
How business gas is measured
Meters record cubic metres or cubic feet, which suppliers convert to kWh on your bill. Comparing quotes in pence per kWh keeps suppliers on a like-for-like footing.
Seasonality and timing
Gas demand and wholesale prices are seasonal. Agreeing a renewal several months ahead of your end date gives you more supplier choice than leaving it to the final weeks.
Levies and VAT on business gas
Business gas bills usually carry the Climate Change Levy and 20% VAT. Low-usage businesses, charities and non-profits may qualify for the reduced 5% rate.
